Aretha Franklin and . . .?

60s Filter: My husband has an upcoming reunion for his high school and is putting together a long playlist of the songs on AM radio in the late 60s. (Yeah, we're old-ish.) He's looking for more female artists. Name and song suggestions, please?

Best answer: You can use Billboard's Hot 100 to check historical Top 10 charts by clicking "View Chart Archives" and selecting the date. You can even listen to snippets of songs that way.

Best answer: You can't go wrong with Motown. Otherwise, Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacher Man, Little Eva's The Locomotion, Betty Everett's The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) and There'll Come a Time, Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Will Walk All Over You, Petula Clark's My Love and I Know a Place.

MOTOWN GIRL GROUPS!! I love Martha and the Vandellas! Awesome songs like:
- "(Love is like a) Heat Wave"
- "Jimmy Mack"
- "Quicksand"
- "In My Lonely Room"
You could also recommend Darlene Love's "(Today I Met) the Boy I'm Gonna Marry", The Crystals "He's a Rebel", The Chiffons "One Fine Day", The Dixie Cups "The Chapel of Love", Betty Everett "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", Little Eva "Locomotion"

Oh, and Petula Clark's Downtown (which was the song I thought of first, and then I forgot to write it down).

Best answer: Check out the playlists of the Big Bang show on KDHX. Doctor Jeff does his best to play a really sweet 60 mix.

Best answer: A beautiful song, and perhaps topical too:

Sandy Denny / Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where The Time Goes?

Best answer: Here're some:
Mary Hopkin: Those Were The Days
Petula Clark: Don't Sleep In The Subway
Spanky & Our Gang: Sunday Will Never Be The Same; Like To Get To Know You
Jackie DeShannon: Put A Little Love In Your Heart
Aretha Franklin: way too many to list
Bobbie Gentry: Ode To Billy Joe (creepy, but I like it)
Janis Ian: Society's Child
Supremes
maybe Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" & "Somebody To Love"
or 5th Dimension's "Wedding Bell Blues"

Best answer: You've got some great suggestions already, but here are some that haven't been mentioned yet:

LaVern Baker - See See Rider
Barbara Lewis - Hello Stranger and Baby I'm Yours
The Ikettes - I'm Blue
Esther Philips - Release Me and And I Love Him
Roberta Flack - First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Best answer: Oh, and from my husband (who it seems wrong to call Mr. Bearwife):

If the group is interested, here are the tunes by female artists I had already:

Merilee Rush & The Turnabouts: Angel of the Morning
Sonny & Cher: Bang, Bang
Joni Mitchell: Big Yellow Taxi
The Mamas & The Papas: California Dreamin' (co-ed)
Stone Poneys: Different Drum
The Marvelettes: Don't Mess With Bill
Peter, Paul & Mary: I Dig Rock and Roll Music (co-ed)
Diana Ross & The Supremes: Love Child
Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company: Piece of My Heart
Janis Ian: Society's Child
Dusty Springfield: Son of a Preacher Man (does this song explain her preferences?)
Spanky & Our Gang: Sunday Will Never Be The Same
Nancy Sinatra: These Boots Are Made For Walking
It's A Beautiful Day: White Bird (co-ed)
Aretha Franklin: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
We Five: You Were On My Mind (co-ed)
Jefferson Airplane: 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds (co-ed)

I had been looking for a tune by Tina Turner, thanks for the Ikettes song. I had also considered Petula Clark ("Don't Sleep in the Subway" or "Downtown"), Joan Baez ("The Night They Tore Old Dixie Down"), Dionne Warwick ("Do You Know the Way to San Jose"), and tunes by The Cookies, Ronettes (Ronnie was lucky to dump Phil Spector when she did!), The Crystals, Mary Wells, Leslie Gore, Little Eva (I LOVE girl groups!) but I had to cut the music off at 1964. 1964 because "Louie Louie" was a hit and I remember junior-high parties where we played it 47 times in a row.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.
