Help with .xls files on a G1.

My G1 or gmail has stopped converting .xls files to google docs. Can I fix this?
I get my work schedule through my gmail account, which I usually read over my G1. What used to happen was I would click the preview button, and I'd see an HTML version of the .xls file (standard excel spreadsheet).
A month or two ago, when I tried to click the preview button, I got a message that gmail had unexpectedly quit and gmail would have to close. It has happened every time since.
Android is totally up to date, no other problems with gmail as far as I can tell.

Response by poster: I have turned the phone off and on, maybe off for up to an hour at a time. No change.
Oh, and the exact message I get is:
"Sorry!
The application Gmail (process com.google.android.gm) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
and then I have one button to press which is "Force Close"

Try clearing Gmail's cache on the phone. This cache persists even if you shut down the phone. My coworker had a similar problem he solved this way.

Response by poster: Clearing the cache did not work. Also didn't work after restarting after clearing cache. Other option is deleting gmail data, which sounds severe. Help?

Response by poster: Deleting data did not work as well. Also, while poking around the manage applications section, I found several com. apps missing. Should I try a factory reset and go from there?

Response by poster: In case anyone else has this issue: I spoke to my phone company's tech support and the next step was to backup and then do a factory reset. Problem now resolved.
