Well, it doesn't start in WWI, but it certainly reminds me of an all time favorite Italian family saga.

Uh, I mean, Italian family saga.

Hm. Almost certainly not it, but reminds me of the UK comedy Blackadder, which featured recurring characters, but each series in a different time period. However, it was always in England. The fourth series, Blackadder Goes Forth, was set during World War One. None of the series took place in the 60s, however, though several were in the 16th century, and none were set in Italy.

Best answer: Perhaps Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series of alternate history vampire novels. The second novel in this series is 'The Bloody Red Baron', set during WWI, and the third is 'Judgment of Tears', also known as 'Dracula Cha Cha Cha', which Wikipedia says is actually set in 1959, but close enough.

The first novel is set in Victorian London, and there are also some short stories and novellas connected to the series. Did they look like vampire fans?

Oh, 'Judgment of Tears/Dracula Cha Cha Cha' is set in Rome.

Maybe something about the Three Secrets of Fatima? The second one was during WWI, and stated that WWI would end. The third one was written down and was not to be released/read until 1960.

Response by poster: Yes! Hive you have astonished me again.
They were definitely vampire fans!
I overheard the highly enthusiastic conversation on the street outside this bookshop.
eatyourcellphone has the correct answer but all the answers are interesting.

I would have asked what they we're talking about but my phone rang.
