Can I use any HDMI cable with my PS3?

Hi,
I'm trying to buy a super cheap HDMI cable and am wondering if I need to see "PS3" on the package in order for it to be ok. Thanks so much for any help.

Just about any HDMI cable should do ya. There's no need to get an official branded, or even an expensive one at all.

Buy it online. Best Buy's (all big-box) HDMI cables are ridiculously overpriced.

I believe you need a Category 2/version 1.3 type of cable for the best bluray experience.

Absolutely any HDMI cable will do.

Wasn't there a test on done of Monster cables vs. Regular cables vs. a coathanger?

Yep, Google says I'm not making it up. Gist is a bunch of guys couldn't reliably tell the difference (for audio) between a ultra-high-end Monster cable and a coathanger. That was audio, but you get the idea.

Not all HDMI cables are the same.

See the chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

Bottom of the page (I wish they had an anchor) for HDMI Versions. Go with a cable version 1.3 or higher. That said, you shouldn't pay more than $8 for a cable. Don't pay more for a Monster cable.

As a former employee of Monster Cable, I can solemy swear that any brand cable for DVI or HDMI is just as good as the next. Its digital signal, not possible to break down do to interference.

As for the coathanger vs. monster cable, that's a stupid stunt and pointless and has no bearing on sound quality, it only proves coathangers can hold a current. Go ahead and string your 1000 watt stereo system up with coathangers if you want.

For all its worth, just yesterday I ordered two HDMI cables from monoprice.com and the total including shipping was about $12. I have ordered from them in the past and been very happy. You will not be able to tell the difference between their $4 cable and the $50 cable from Best Buy.

I snagged a $30 cable when I bought my TV and then 3, longer, rev 1.3's from ebay for $10 shipped for the set. The shielding on the $30 cable is more stout, but there is NO visible signal difference.

I loaned one to a friend who has a completely insane audiophile/videophile setup (honestly it's worth more than his home) so he could test his new work laptop's ability to throw 1080p, and he upon returning it he was mad he'd special ordered monsters.

Take it from a long-time home theater geek and gamer: it's all pretty much hype. Unlike analog cables (such as component and VGA), HDMI is a digital signal. You pretty much get a picture or you don't. HDMI 1.3 is more a connector standard than a wire. If you can find a cheap cable, go for it. Don't spend $50 on a 3-foot cable from Monster or other rip-off artists.

Long story, short is that you shouldn't pay over, say, $2/foot, and as others have suggested, places like Monoprice and Triangle Cables (I've purchased from and been satisfied with HDMI from both places) will sell you well-made cables for half that.

I've used various non-branded HDMI cables with two different PS3's and never had an issue.

As others have said - it's the "spec" revision and a digital signal - so branding is not important.

The other type of "cable" that does not matter are those optical audio connectors... Again - fibre optic is fibre optic...

It's worth looking at all your other cables and seeing if any are too long or short. As others have said, the online places usually are very cheap and don't charge much more for shipping, so you can redo your whole system for not much money. It's also nice to get network cables in the proper length. Always buy a bit longer than you think though: a 1' cable is too short for connecting anything except stacked components.
