What's the deal with turning a fridge sideways?

What exactly is the deal with turning a mini-fridge sideways? I bought a mini-fridge with a separate freezer. I'm taking it up to school in a suburban, so it fits, but only on its side. Will the world explode if I put it on its side, or do I just have to wait a day before I plug it in?

I did this and left the fridge upright for a couple of days before turning it on - it's been running well for several years.

Yeah, just have to leave it upright for a day or so. The oil in the compressor is gravity fed. If you turn it on its side, you have to let the oil migrate back to where it is supposed to be.
