A bicycle built for two

Can you recommend a place near Rochester, NY that would rent out a tandem bicycle?

I will be spending some time with a friend in Rochester, NY later this summer, and we're interested in trying out a tandem bicycle for a few days. I'm hoping someone can recommend a bike shop that would rent out a tandem cycle for multiple days.

I think that Towpath Bike rents tandems. Its in Pittsford NY just outside of Rochester.

Seconding Towpath. They're in Schoen Place, which is right by the canal.

You can check out lots of Rochester biking resources on RocWiki.

I don't have firsthand knowledge of Towpath, but I know people that I work with who rent from them when needed. Enjoy!

Not an answer to your question, but since you've never had the dubious pleasure of riding a tandem bike, let me be the first to admit that it's not nearly as much fun as riding a regular bike (especially if you bikepath has any obstacles, like a low curb: you'll have to dismount and carry the tandem over it every single time). Balancing and steering are especially hard, and chances are, if you are renting a bike, it will be something in less than stellar shape which will make things even more difficult.

In fact, I have had the pleasure of riding a tandem bike before, and I thought it was a lot of fun. I didn't think balance and steering were particularly difficult, and since we were riding on the street we didn't encounter any obstacles we couldn't go around.

A friend once referred to tandem bicycles as "relationship accelerators" -- whatever direction your relationship is going in, riding on a tandem will get you there faster.
