What year did New York City switch from having Fourth of July fireworks on the Hudson River to the East River?

Settling an idle bet: I seem to remember long ago, perhaps in the late '70's, New York's Independence Day fireworks being on the West Side. They've been on the East River now for ages; anybody know the first year that happened?

The 1986 fireworks display to celebrate the renovation of Lady Liberty had over 30 barges that stretched around the tip of Manhattan, set in both the Hudson and East rivers. So it's not always an either or.

It was 1983.

"Traditionally the display had taken place off the Upper West Side, but some residents of the area, but some residents of the area, angered by the crowds and litter that went with the pyrotechnics, appealed through the Federation of West Side Block Associations to the city to have it changed."

Whoops -- the fireworks display in 1982 wasn't sponsored by Macy's -- the 1983 one was.
