I need a Cheer-up mix, bad
December 15, 2008 10:08 AM   Subscribe

Having absolutely the worst month. I need a "times ain't so bad" slash "cheer me up" mix. For professional reasons, I wanted to keep this question anonymous...

So I was just informed after five years in my office that I'm losing my position due to 'restructuring'. My father was forced into retirement last month, and is trying to reboot his career entirely post-60, and lives in the rust belt. My brother had to go into the hospital on Thanksgiving Day where he found out he has a heart problem that will never go away, AND his insurance is claiming that they didn't actually cover him until December, so he's on the hook for the whole cost. And of course, the girl I was sort of seeing wants to just be friends, and I was just in a wedding where I was the only single member of the wedding party. I am having a really, really bad couple of weeks here.

I got the idea for a 'Times Ain't So Bad' mix to help my mood, but I've totally stalled, and that has only frustrated me further. I have considered the following tracks:

The Good Life - Kanye West (feat. T-Pain)
Everything's Gonna Be All Right - Bob Marley
(maybe) Happy/Sad - Pizzicato Five
(maybe) The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
(maybe) Right Now - Van Halen

Can you help me out hive mind? I know it's a stupid little thing, but I really think it's the kind of thing that would do me a lot of good over the next few weeks. My friends and family have been incredibly supportive, but it's a lot of weight for one set of shoulders. Thanks, as always. AskMe is always the best.

It is cheesy, but when I need a pick me up, I listen to ABBA Gold (their greatest hits album). I like them completely and unironically, and just the opening measures of "Waterloo" lift my spirits.

They are also really great to dance to at 3am when you've been working for hours in an animation studio and you've still got hours of work to go, or really anytime someone with no rhythm at all needs something to dance to.

its extremely cliche - but REM's 'Everybody Hurts' never fails to put things in perspective for me. Put it on headphones, turn the volume up and close your eyes.

"littlest birds" by the Be Good Tanyas always cheers me up, and "people gonna talk" by James Hunter always makes me dance in my work chair.

On the flip side, you could listen to some Townes Van Zandt and be thankful you didn't have *his* demons to contend with. the whole "Our mother the mountain" album is spooooo-keeee.

Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" was actually written expressly for this kind of thing -- it was about a miner's strike in the UK at the time.

Cat Stevens' "Trouble" is a good wallow-y kind of song, while his "On The Road to Find Out" is nice and hopeful.

And I can't put my finger on exactly why, but the Faces' "Ooh La La" also cheers me up.

I find anything by the Beatles is good music to lift you up. I'd recommend Abbey Road specifically for this purpose, the whole album just has a sense of completeness after you've listened to the last song that it helps you forget your troubles and makes you feel content.

Also if you want happy sounding songs, try listening to some early Beatles, the sense of happiness and carefree-ness(?) is infectious.

As contradictory as it seems, I always get a huge mood lift when I crank The Smith's Louder than Bombs album and sing along. Your mileage may vary when you get to "Unloveable" or "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want", but they never fail to cheer me.

Also the inkspots -- "Mama Don't Allow" always makes me grin real big. Hang in there!

There is probably no more uplifting a band than I'm From Barcelona, unless it's Polyphonic Spree, so if you're looking for happy-go-lucky music, I'd check them out. Architecture in Helsinki is also really fun.

I believe that bad things happen all at once for a reason. It's like ripping off a band-aid, you could drag it out slowly (have bad things happen over the course of like, 2 years) or just rip the thing off (have the world's most ungodly horrible month, but you know it'll only get better from there.) I had a week like this a couple years ago and you reach a point where it almost becomes funny in some sick way. At the end of said horrible week, my neighbor backed into my parked car and smashed out the entire driver side window. When I saw it I should have probably collapsed in tears, but instead i started laughing uncontrollably. It was just all too messed up for my brain to even contain anymore. It was the icing on the insanity cake. And sure enough, when the following week went by with nothing out of the ordinary happening, well, i practically felt like celebrating. You'll get there.

I realize that didn't answer your question :-) here are my answers-
Jimmy Eat World- A Praise Chorus (this is a particularly good song for New Years Eve for some reason)
Ben Folds- There's Always Someone Cooler Than You (a generally feel-good song)
Also . . . i really feel the best way for me to cheer up is to dip into goofy old songs that I used to love and know all the words to, but haven't listened to in years. Ace of Base comes to mind, personally. Nothing better than driving around, singing along to some dumb song that reminds you of a happier time in your life. like Tubthumping by Chumbawamba, or semicharmed life by third eye blind. i don't know if the lyrics even matter as much as the tempo.

the one song that really gets me back on track when i am feeling crappy about life is Come Downstairs and Say Hello by Guster. this one is kinda quiet and comes on slow, so i dont know if it would fit in your mix. maybe at the end. but people who like the band are OBSESSED with this magical song. I've heard of people using it as a wedding song. I use it to help me sleep when I am feeling troubled.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles in your life -- I looked at my iTunes music that had the "happy" tag and here are some ideas. Some are happy-themed, some are just plain bouncy. I'm starring the ones that should be esp. helpful.

"16 Military Wives" -- the Decemberists
*** "Rooftops" -- Lostprophets
"Mars Loves Venus" The Brunettes
"Ma-Ya-Hi" -- The Ozone
"Jump" -- Van Halen
***"Independence Day" -- Melanie C.
"Hotel Song" -- Regina Spektor
"Geek in the Pink" -- Jason Mraz
"Cecilia" -- Simon & Garfunkel
"Bubble Toes" -- Jack Johnson

And kudos on deliberately choosing upbeat music -- when I get into a funk, I tend toward music that exacerbates my grief instead of assuaging it. You're wiser than that!

Jonathan Coulton
"Skullcrusher Mountain" or a bonus WoW version which is kind of funny if hard to see sometimes.

"Just because I'm losing...doesn't mean I've lost!" - lyric from Lost. The beat is catchy too.

Also,

Johnnny Nash - I can see clearly now.
Louis Armstrong - What a wonderful world.
Julie Andrews - My Favourite Things.
Elvis - Viva Las Vegas.
Eartha Kitt - I want to be Evil.
Peggy Lee - Hey Big Spender.
Doris Day - Che sera sera.
Bert and Ernie - Rubber Duckie. I defy you to be sad! I DEFY you!

And the 80s...
Michael Jackson - Blame it on the boogie
Nick Cave - Black Betty.
Bananarama - Venus.
Dead or Alive - You spin me round (right round like a record baby).
Radio Birdman - Aloha Steve and Danno.
Squeeze - Cool for Cats. On TOTP, no less!

And then there's the break-up cheer-up standards...
Abba - Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight).
Weather Girls - It's raining men.
Gloria Gaynor - I will survive.
Divine - It's a close call here but I'm so beautiful just edges out You think you're a man in the cheery-up stakes, I think.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show Theme (You might just make it after all).
Tammy Wynette - Stand by your maaaaaaaaaan. Oh, the irony.
Dionne Warwick doing Burt Bacharach - There is always something there to remind me.
Carly Simon - You're so vain.

Sometimes too going the other way and wallowing in (yet more) melancholy/trashy country music has the perverse effect of making me feel heaps better.

Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
Nick Cave - The Ship Song
Serge Gainsbourg - Bonnie and Clyde.
The White Stripes version of Jolene.
Marty Robbins - El Paso.
The Eagles - Desperado. Here performed by ''a lovely lady - Linda Rondstat''! Sweet.
The Killers covering Ruby (don't take your love to town).
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire. Love is, indeed, a burning thing.
Elvis Costello - Don't let me be misunderstood.
And of course, The Gambler. If watching Kenny and teh Muppets doesn't cheer you up, nothing will. Nothing!
