Looking for the title of an old horror film...

A friend of mine needs help remembering the title of a horror film she saw a long, long time ago...
This is the way she describes it:
"set in remote british isles, hebrides perhaps, creature lands on island and begins to suck bone marrow out the sheep then moves onto human population. creature looks like a hoover tanks-style vacuum cleaner with a shaggy rug thrown over it. moves very slowly yet strike terror in the hearts of the unsuspecting islanders."
Any ideas?

Response by poster: "b&w filmed in the 40's or 50's perhaps, british studio"

Sounds familiar, which makes me think that Mystery Science Theatre 3000 might have done an episode using the movie. Maybe the episode list will remind her?
(it's the only exposure to b&w horror films I've had)

Best answer: It's not black and white, but might it be Island of Terror?

I can possibly eliminate IMDB as a resource - a search of B&W horror or sci-fi films made in the UK between 1940 and 1960 didn't turn up anything that matched your request.

Hmm... there's also Night of the Big Heat, which is another horror movie set on a remote (Scottish) island. This one involves dead sheep.

Response by poster: Thanks for the help Paragon & JQ - found a portion of Island of Terror on youtube, so sent her that link & the Night of the Big Heat to see if either jog her memory...

Response by poster: Also - thanks for the suggestion, politikitty. I've been browsing through the MST3k database, looking at titles & descriptions of movies...

The Creeping Terror, maybe? I think it starred a hunk of carpet.

I'll second the Creeping Terror as a good bet, but there is also some similarity to X: The Unknown which is set in Scotland and has radioactive mud as the monster, or possibly, though less likely, The Quatermass Experiment aka The Creeping Unknown, which has some of the same qualities but mixed a little differently than you describe. Both of those two are quite enjoyable films though, so if she remembers it fondly as an effectively scary film it could be one of those two since the Creeping Terror ranks much higher on the kitsch meter.
