How can I access a harddrive on my network that does not have appropriate permissions set by the main server on the network.

I am not a network administrator. I work at a school that has 1 Windows Server 2003 computer managing the network, 2 Windows XP computers serving videos and an HP Media Smart server serving videos to students at 20 workstations. The HP Media Smart server is plugged into the network through an ethernet switch, not through USB. We had a college student set up our network. I have reasonable tech skills but no Windows Server 2003 skills. I am busy trying to figure this out on my own, but it's hard to unwrap what he did. I've tried to contact him and he hasn't responded. My co-worker probably has a little more skill then I do, but he's busy teaching and not able to work on it.

When the network was set up, we knew that students being on the network together would be able to map drives with their neighbors and share files. This could result in them sharing homework. So it is set up so that their priveledges are set up through the Windows 2003 machine. This also means that the priveledges to see the video servers are established through the Windows 2003 machine.

Everything was working fine. But we were having problems with the HP Media Smart Server shutting off randomly. After following the instructions to reset the server and reinstall it's software that HP customer support sent me, the Media server can no longer be seen on the network. We have the same problem with a USB drive that is hooked up to one of the windows XP drives.

So, what could have been done on the windows xp machine to set up priveledges in this way that allows some of these machines being seen on the network but keeps me from seeing these other servers on the network.

Response by poster: As a followup I have set the domain on the HP media server to the domain of the windows 2003 server. It still does not show up in the users and computers admin even after rebooting. All the other computers do. Though the USB drive does not.

.After following the instructions to reset the server and reinstall it's software that HP customer support sent me, the Media server can no longer be seen on the network.

What I am guessing here is that its now set back to its default settings. It looks like the HP is just a NAS.

What you need to do is to browse its shares is to type its IP into Start > Run. I'll use 192.168.1.50 as a example:

\\192.168.1.50

If there are any active shares on the HP you should see them. If not then you need to configure the HP to share whatever folders it was sharing before. I dont this your windows 2003 server is doing anything. The HP is its own little server.

I dont know your configuration so there's not much I can advise, other than asking the student to document everything and show you how to do this stuff when he next comes in.

Response by poster: I did ipconfig

Found the ip address

Typed \\192.168.1.5

Got "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

I also tried pinging it. Packets sent = 4. Received = 0, lost = 4

I can remote desktop into it however.

I have configured the HP Server to share everything.

Response by poster: On the server are the following directories

Builtin
Domain controllers
Foreignsecurityprincipals
Studentcomputers
Studentusers
Teacher computers
Teacher users
and Users

The folders for the domain controllers, student computers, student users, teacher computers and teacher users all have a squiggly thing inside them.

All of the computers that are available on the network are listed inside the student computers folder. I can't add the media server to this folder. It lets me create it, but it doesn't let me put the dns in. And thus it is unavailable.
