Cheap car rental places in/near NYC?

Renting a car in (or near) NYC. Prices are wicked expensive if you rent in-town, and go down dramatically once you leave. If I'm looking to go upstate, where's the best place to pick up a car, that's close to the Metro North stop there?

I've done this several times to go to Vermont and Massachusetts. Take the metro-north to Stamford. There's an Avis & a Hertz rental place right next to the station.

Avis: Metro Center - STD
One Station Plaza, Stamford, CT 06902 , U S A
(1) 203-964-3200
Sun 08:00AM-04:00PM; Mon-Fri 06:30AM-07:00PM; Sat 08:00AM-04:00PM

Hertz website is lame, so I don't have that info.

Best answer: If Stamford's a bit out of your way, there's also a Hertz right across the street from the "North White Plains" Metro North station. (Although you're still headed up the east side of Westchester, so it's not all that different.)

If it's better for you to head up the Hudson line, you can probably just call Hertz or Avis and ask them for a stop that has one. (Like maybe Yonkers? That's actually my line, but I don't recall any, off-hand.)

Response by poster: Awesome, thanks! North White Plains looks like the best price/performance for two people ($24 round trip, save ~$50 on the rental).

Also note that you can almost always get a cheaper rental car price by using one of the big travel agency sites, instead of going to the car rental company's own page.

orbitz.com
expedia.com
travelocity.com
priceline.com is good too
