What's the best place to buy cotton argyles socks like those sold by J.Crew?

I've always liked J.Crew's argyle socks - cotton, and thicker and more comfortable than a dress sock, but not so thick as to upset the sock/shoe balance. I do wonder, though, if some other sock purveyor sells a similar item of more quality, less expense, and/or more variety - in short, what's the best place to buy cotton argyles socks like those sold by J.Crew?

I readily concede that I may already offer the best answer to my question in the question itself, but I do tend to think otherwise...

Ben Silver makes quality stuff, including argyle socks, but they'll cost you.

Mr. Padraigin (who enjoys both J. Crew and Banana Republic socks) just came home last night with a big bag o' socks from Macy's, several pairs of which were argyle. Gold Toe Premium was one brand in particular, also "Club Room" which I believe is a Macy's house label. Anyway, Macy's was having a sock sale, plus they had a much bigger variety of colors, and Mr. Pad was disappointed in the palette he found at his usual sock-buying venues.

He has some pretty specific sock-thickness standards that I don't pretend to understand, but I hope this helps.

mds35, it looks like the Ben Silver socks are more expensive than J.Crew; the OP is looking for socks that are less expensive.

I have also gotten good quality, not-too-expensive socks from Macy's, Sears, and other similar department stores.

Best answer: and/or means and or or.

Pantherella.

Do you want better quality or less expensive? You can't have both. It's impossible.

again, according to the post he is looking for socks that are any combination of more quality, less expense, and more variety than J. Crew.

My boyfriend has several pairs of the Gold Toe argyle socks from JC Penney and they seem pretty nice. They are $15 for 3 pairs but only two are argyle.

I've had success with tommy hilfiger socks. I've gotten these and Gold Toe at stores like Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Ross, etc. At probably 50% the cost of going to Macys

I've always found those Gold Toe argyle socks at Ross for about half the price (~$7 for a pack of 3, one pair of which is not argyle.)

While I can't vouch for Gold Toe's argyle socks, I can say that they make some wonderful white socks. (I also have a three pairs of black GT socks which are really nice.)

I suggest you try out the GT's.

Gap has argyle socks. I cannot speak for the men's versions, but I have about 6 pairs of their women's socks (and 2 of those are argyle) and I find them to be the perfect middle ground between trouser/dress sock and regular sock. They're thin but not too thin; cotton, so my feet don't sweat as much as they do with synthetic trouser socks; and do a darn fine job at staying UP as opposed to falling down to my ankles at every opportunity.
