The Wire, season 2, episode 6: What does Omar say to the prosecutor right before the theme song starts?

During Bird's trial:

Prosecutor asks: How have you survived this long robbing drug dealers?
Omar: [something like] Eats the eights, I guess.

[when you walk through the garden..]

I can't hear anything that makes sense to me and I need your fresh ears. What did Omar say?

Best answer: Prosecutor: And exactly how long has this been your occupation, Mr. Little?
Omar: Oh, I don't know exactly. I venture to say maybe 'bout eight or nine years.
Prosecutor: Mr. Little, how does a man rob drug dealers for eight or nine years, and live to tell about it?
Omar: Day at a time, I suppose.

An online transcript says Omar's reply is: "Day at a time, I suppose."

I frequently turn on subtitles when watching The Wire.

Response by poster: It sounds so obvious now! Time for new headphones. Thanks, all!

Absolutely, subtitles are a necessity for that show as well as a lot of the FX Network dramas.

Nthing the subtitles. I don't think we would have enjoyed The Wire nearly as much without them: we could actually make sense of the plot because we could see what they were saying, instead of sitting there going "wait, did he say X? Because that means Y! ZOMG!"

Another vote for subtitles. If you're watching The Wire without them, you're missing a lot.
