No but yes.

Is there a mechanical latch/lock mechanism I can buy or construct that will allow a door to lock after the first time it is opened?

Naming scheme help

I'm developing a naming scheme around black birds and am looking for names of birds that are black or mostly black but whose common name does not contain the word black.

'Cause how you get there is the worthier part

I like road trip stories whether there is a goal or just a journey with a faint MacGuffin of purpose. Looking for recommendations for a short story/novella/novel (or heck even real life travel memoir) that consists of adventures on a road trip.

Car controls for short people

Recommendations or personal experience on extending control pedals for a 4'10" driver? Maybe 2-6".

Thank you

There has been a death in my immediate family. I'm off work for a couple weeks however when I return to work the nature of my employment means I will have to endure hundreds of condolence conversations without breaking down. What are some short replies I can use to politely acknowledge the thought but minimize the length of the interaction.

Increase the number of steps of an Android volume control

My current android phone (an LG Velvet) only has 15 volume settings between mute and maximum volume. Is there any way to either increase the number of steps or select a half way setting?

Tick Tock Brinngggg Brinngggg Brinngggg Brinngggg Brinngggg

Recommend me an alarm app for Android. Difficulty: it needs to slowly raise the volume and I need to be able to disable the next alarm without disabling the next days alarm.

Woo. Wooooo. Wooooooo.

Inspired by Mayor West's comment, what is something in your profession that has been proven to be ineffective (or has no basis in science) but is still done by many/most people in that profession?

"Russian Warship

Go Fuck yourself." is obviously a translation into English. Was the original in Ukrainian or Russian? What would the transcription be in the originating language?

What kind of ladder is this

The closing minute of season 3 episode 5 of Deadbeat has a character using an unusual rope/wooden ladder [image]. Does this style of ladder have a name and what was the original use?

Decent introduction or waste of time?

The Instapot people are flogging a Sous Vide immersion heater and it is currently available locally for C$90. I've been contemplating the tech for awhile and this is a price I can swing. Will this unit provide a decent introduction to Sous Vide cooking or should I pass?

Late to the party but that means the problem is well hashed out right?

Semi lock down looks to extend well past even Ukrainian Xmas this year. What will be the easiest internet meeting thing I can get my extended family to use in order to have a virtual Xmas dinner?

Blue Plastic Sheet Media?

In the 1966 movie "A Fine Madness" a character in the film has a dictograph that uses what looks like blue mylar or acetate sheets to record audio. [Screenshots one, two, three, four, five, six. Video at here, here, and here.] What is either the recording media or the machine that used it?

When did purple become a thing.

In Back to the Future Marty wakes up in Loraine's bedroom (1955) and at one point Loraine comments that she'd never seen purple underwear before. Was suburban male underwear in 1955 not coloured / plain white? If so when did coloured underwear generally and purple specifically become popular/normal?

Memorialise a Purr

I have a windows laptop and cheap headset that plugs into plain old headset jack. I want to use the mic on the headset to record my cat's purr to an .mp3 so I can use it as a notification sound on my phone. Recommend me a free software to do this?

ELI5: audio edition

Layperson educational or informational podcast recommendation? I love Futility Closet but I'm approaching the end of my second complete series listen so I'm looking for new podcasts in a similar vein. Bonus points if they are on Spotify.

Sucking brushes dog edition

I have a shop vac. I'd like to use it to brush my medium hair, double coat dog to cut down on house vacuuming. However I need a brush attachment for the hose. I have a bristle upolstry brush that doesn't work out the undercoat. Looking for a recommendation for hose brush for the dog (but if it did double duty for the cat that would be great too.)

Loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg Cons

Looking for the title of this book from a comment in the recent forgery FPP:
BlahLaLa: One of my favorite novels concerns a family of forgers who, for generations, have been playing the long game: each forger makes forgeries of contemporary art of the era, using all the usual contemporary supplies—the paints, the canvas, the wood for the frame, etc.—then puts away the art to be stored for decades or even centuries, so later family members can "find" them and sell them as originals. And everything checks out because it's all authentic, except the actual artist.

O 2 IT

looking for a daily/weekly/monthly chore list and assignment tracker. Windows and android clients would be great. One of the parties is out of town for long periods so a regular whiteboard/cork board is proving problematic.

Favourite make ahead meals?

Looking to make 3+ weeks worth of meals all in one massive cooking session. Ideally they'd be something that only needs reheating from frozen but the first couple of days could be refrigerated (specifically I had the idea of gathering a couple dump and push start instapot meals into a container or two). Links to specific recipes would be greatly appreciated.

Short and Long

I want an icon (widget?) on my (android) home screen that toggles Setup -> Display -> Advanced -> Sleep -> 1m / 30 minutes. I can't seem to figure out what to search for in the Play store. Recommendations on a app that enables this?

Not a litteral toss?

There is a bunch of chatter about how the President messed up the coin toss at the recent army-navy game. I just finished watching several Superbowl coin tosses trying to figure out what he did wrong and they all seem to be the same as the President's. I'm obviously a sports bumpkin; can someone ELI5 what he did wrong?

Vacationy things to do, see, eat in Phoenix?

Myself and co-worker are going to be in Phoenix for a few day of training (actually in some community just outside apparently) the third week of October. While we'll be busy most of the time we'll be there we do have one day and potentially one evening free plus a rental car to get around. Looking for recommendations of must see things we could fit into a relaxed day off whithout consuming all day driving.

APK Safety

So I'm wanting to sideload an app on my android device. I realize there is a certain amount of risk that the app could itself be a malware load but I'd at least like to avoid the download containing a regular virus/trojan of some sort. Are there trusted tools I can use to scan for this sort of thing like there are for windows apps?

So much water.

Looking for the name of a YA book series about people who, unbeknownst to them, live in a dry Mediterranean basin; and it is slowly filling. It features big cats and the environment lacks of wood (an intact log is a king's treasure). Anyone recall the name? [inspired by this front page post]

Books for my mom.

Looking for recommendations for fiction books for my mom available in e-book format. She says she's willing to read most things but I know she doesn't much like Sci-Fi (or probably speculative fiction (vampires, zombies, elves) nor bodice rippers. Mysteries and westerns have been well received in the past.

Snow Hooning

There is a Audi commercial currently playing on some advertising screens at YVR. It features a woman driving a red Audi in a snowy mountain/ski village engaging in a rash of anti social behaviour. Can anyone point me to an online source?

Looking for specific examples of automobile features considered (by the manufacturer anyways) so advanced as be worthy of being proclaimed on exterior badges and are now considered mundane "features" of modern cars.

A little _too_ sticky

So I inherited a rice cooker that has to be at least 30 years old. It has a plain aluminum cooking pot. I just did my first batch of rice in the cooker and a single layer of rice stuck to the pot and hardened/scorched. My question is: Is this normal for an aluminum pot? Do I need to spray the pot with some cooking spray or something? Or is the cooker defective and heating too high/long? Some other process error?

You aren't the boss of ME!

I'm looking for, for lack of a better description, free form tower defence games. Gem Craft Labyrinth was my go to in this genre but I've pretty well maxed it out now and I'm looking for a replacement. Preferably free to play and for windows or android.

Wide Fi suggestions on best practices?

I'm dealing with two buildings spaced approximately 200 feet apart. Inside the buildings (on the third floor) are network capable security camera DVRs but no network connection. I'd like to be able to access the DVRs wirelessly ideally from anywhere in the two buildings but minimally from a room on the first floor of one of the buildings. What is the best practice way of doing this?

Not all summer in a day

Help identify this old SF short story about a small group of interstellar colonists (maybe one or two dozen). The colonists (maybe explorers) identities and personal details were kept secret from the people on earth. I'm pretty sure I read it in a paperback anthology but it might have been in a magazine and it would have been at least 20 years ago, more likely 30. The story is probably even older. Gotcha spoiler under the fold.

Never go in against a cherry pit when death is on the line! Ha ha ha...

We're making BBQ sauce. Yay! A single cherry pit has been chopped up by a hand blender in an 8 quart pot of sauce. Boo! Should we toss this pot or will it be safe?

I want to avoid pissing people off with incorrect terminology. What are some common terminology that outsiders get wrong that really grind the gears of insiders?

Music to read by.

So Awesome Mix Vol. 1 turns out to be a perfect album to drown out the sound of rain while I'm reading before bed. What other commercial mixes or soundtracks are similar (not too bouncy and without large changes in volume) and might also serve in this capacity.

ID a dystopian future short story with massive unemplyment and a utopia.

I'm trying to ID a short story where the protagonist becomes unemployed in a world where once you lose your job you have no hope of getting another job and are therefor forced to accept marginal government assistance. Additional spoilerific details inside.
