I'm looking for, for lack of a better description, free form tower defence games. Gem Craft Labyrinth was my go to in this genre but I've pretty well maxed it out now and I'm looking for a replacement. Preferably free to play and for windows or android.

When I call it free form I like GCL because it allows one to place towers pretty much any where within its grid except for where there are already features. All the games I get when searching for tower defence games games now are obviously aimed at mobile users and compensate for the poor interface accuracy with very limited tower placement options.

I also like the long term upgradable nature of the towers in GCL though I can live without that.

Depending on where you're willing to play them, make sure and check out the other Gemcraft games. Game in a Bottle is the company. (Since you only mentioned Labyrinth and there are four total...)

Yeah, there's more in the Gemcraft series if you want some more of that. For a more 'fun' feel, there's the Bloons TD games. (Monkeys throwing darts at ballons.) Vector Tower Defense was also an old fave; not so many maps, but you can build up each map for ages.

Best answer: The Creeper World games are my go-to TD right now. It's quite freeform, allowing you to place and even move your towers. It's signature selling point is that the enemies are liquid that flows and floods the map. It is immensely satisfying to push back the tides and win the level.

This is only free if you happen to own Starcraft 2 already (though maybe you can find a sale since its so old now - expansions not needed), but there are a ton of really great tower defense games in the arcade section, with all kinds of different mechanics and strategy, including what you describe here. Nothing at all like the actual Starcraft game. If you want specific recommendations let me know!

Response by poster: Thanks for the suggestions. I'd actually played all of the gemcraft variants but liked GCL best.

While not really what I had in mind (I like building elaborate mazes to slowly wear down the opposition) Creeper World Evermore has the benefit of daily new scenarios.
