firefox: open bookmarks in a new tab by default

Is there an extension or a setting I can change to get firefox to open bookmarks in a new tab as the default single-left click behavior?
I use the Tabbrowser extension (http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/tabextensions/index.html.en) which allows you to customise almost anything related to tabs. I'm sure it has the option you describe.

Best answer: Actually the guy who makes Tabbrowser reccomends you use Tab Mix. I've tried it out and it has the option you want.

Pressing down on the scroll button on your mouse (if applicable) will open links in new tabs, as well.

TabBrowser extension definitely does what you want--I've gotten to the point that I can't use Firefox without it. (Most other folks seem to use "TabBrowser Preferences", which is similar, but not as robust--"TabBrowser" is not supported as an official FF extension, though, while "TB Prefs" is.)
The big difference for me regarding TabBrowser is that it can actually apply a pretty sophisticated logic in deciding whether or not to open a new tab. For example, you can set it so that links that lead to a different domain automatically open a new tab, but links within the same domain as the current page open up in the same tab. That way, you don't end up opening 5 tabs as you navigate through a single article or a site, etc.
(Slight derail: Is anyone else having a problem where they can't see the "addons.mozilla.org" site PenDevil linked to for "TabMix"? I keep getting told I have to update to 1.0.4 before I can see it, but I've done that 3 or 4 times at this point, and still can't get in. (The automatic update feature within FF seems to recognize that I'm current--it's just the add-ons site.)

Yes! I am having this problem too, but attributed it to the fact that I've monkeyed around with different setting in about:config. I spoke with a mozilla expert on irc the other day and all the settings he had me check were fine...the thing is, if you start firefox with the -profilemanager switch, and create a new, dummy profile, it will work. I guess I could print out the configs for both profiles and compare.

Huh. I've messed around with some settings, too, but a long time ago, not since the move to 1.0.0, at least. Maybe some past tweak is coming back to haunt me.
I guess I could try the profile manager work-around, but it's kind of a pain. Oh well--thanks for the feedback. At least I know I'm not alone.

In your profile, in prefs.js, comment out any pref that starts with extension. One of them does this. Note that Firefox must be closed when you edit prefs.js as it will overwrite it on close and would read it until you've closed and restarted. so close Firefox, edit, then start firefox.

Yeah...well the profilemanager thing was more for testing purposes. It basically indicates that a fresh install aloows updates, and my customized install does not, for whatever reason. Sidenote: I just tried it now and it worked...now I'm not sure if I'm having the problem here at work or on my home pc. Is the problem still there for you, LairBob? I'm not sure if they've done anything on the server end...

Thanks for the suggestion, ortho, but still no luck. I just went through a pretty thorough process of trying to weed out any "extension.*" prefs, and while a couple of the "chromedit" ones are apparently required for FF to actually start correctly (mine just hangs without them), even with the others completely deleted from my "prefs.js", I can't get in.
Any other ideas?

QuickTabPrefToggle will allow you to open all NEW windows in a new tab as default left-click, but won't treat bookmarks specially.
You could modify something like QuickTabPrefToggle to do this, by seeing if your mouse-click event's target was in a bookmark.
