Does it matter whether your boss (or teacher) thinks that your ability is fixed or can be improved?
Dear MetaFilter community, I'm a graduate student running research on the question above -- whether the beliefs of people in authority positions who evaluate you affect your performance. The question is whether these beliefs, whether made explicit or not, can affect the way we process information, our motivation, and our behavior.
I am interested in your thoughts. My research stems primarily from an academic background, I am a student of Carol Dweck at Stanford. But I would love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and opinions. Would it make a difference to you to hear criticism from your boss if he/she believes that talent is innate, or that skills can be developed through hard work? What sorts of things signal that a boss or teacher thinks ability is fixed or improvable? How they react to you, who they reward, what they say?
If you're interested in helping me out with this research, I'm currently trying to prepare some materials for a study on this topic. The questions you'd be answering would be part of an investment study which, if it works properly now, would be used as part of a later experiment. It takes 5-6 minutes to do, and I'd really appreciate the help. The link is below. Thanks!

Agreed - this belongs in Projects (that's the FAQ entry for it, which explains what it's for). Look up at the top navigation bar and click on "Projects".
