Is there a service that will let you to subscribe to notifications of new artist (music) and/or author (books) releases, but is not spammy?

A lot of individual record stores and labels do this. If you reply with what kind of music (and books) you're interested in we might be able to give you some pointers. I don't know of an "all in one" service like this, though iTunes and Amazon likely have some form of it.

I use the AMG new release list for music (every Monday or Tuesday); I'll try and find a link.
