Help me connect my ps3
December 20, 2007 5:07 PM

Will my 5 connection component video cable for Ps3 work in a 3 connection (I think composite) TV?

I only have a cable meant for HD--not sure what it is called, but it has five connections (2 reds, green, blue, and white).

I came home for the holidays and we have a non-HD tv. It has the older connections that are just 3 (yellow, red, white).

Will my cable work? I tried hooking it up, but just heard sound. Is the video not compatible?

It won't work. If you just had cable-to-cable connections, you could make it work, but on one end you've got the proprietary PlayStation connector that tells the PS3 to output component video. You're going to need a red-white-yellow (aka RCA, aka composite) PlayStation cord. If it's any consolation, they're cheap, and the same ones that worked for the PS1 and PS2 work for the PS3.

You could also get a box that would convert your component (R/B/G) video to RCA (Y) but that would be much more expensive than just buying the PlayStation cable. Check your local used video game store for them, they usually have a wealth of cables for all game systems, for cheap.
