Will an iGo WallPower 120 AC adapter work with a Compaq Presario R3000?

A friend's laptop power adapter became unusable, and she has a deadline tomorrow. She bought an iGo WallPower 120 at RadioShack. The salesman said it would work with her machine, but she is worried because the old adapter says it is 18.5V, 6.5 amps, and the new one says it is 15-24V, 8 amps. There doesn't seem to be much information online about this model. The manual isn't helping her, apparently. She's freaking out... the deadline can't move, and she's running out of battery juice.

Does anyone know if this thing will work with her machine? If it doesn't work, but she learns that by plugging it in, what is the worst thing that could happen?

Best answer: It will work.

It can put out more power than the old one. The laptop will only take as much power as it needs.

Ok, caveat, it won't work if there isn't an adapter tip for her model of laptop. Assuming there is, she is fine. I know a lot of heavy travelers who love their iGo chargers and I've been using one for my Sony without incident.

Best answer: Yes it will. Like Brain says, it's bigger than what you need. Check that it includes the tip you need and that the polarity can be set properly.

It will have a switch for selecting output voltage, be carefull to set that at the appropriate value. Worst thing that could happen is, if you set it higher than you need, you might blow something in your laptop.
