Looking for suggestions for a clean/cheap hostel, hotel in San Francisco... within walking distance to Market/Van Ness if possible, or near public transportation that'll get me there.
If Union Square is within walking distance for you, you might find the answers to this question useful.

I've never stayed there, but I went to check out rooms at the Hotel Metro and it seemed nice -- totally basic, but a slight step up from a hostel. It's just a few blocks from the Haight, toward Van Ness.
I would say, however, that as a woman traveling on my own, I might not be totally comfortable staying in the area, and would probably prefer Union Square. (And I say that as someone who used to live a few blocks from Market & Van Ness.)

There was a women-only boarding house on Fulton, just east of Fillmore. I don't remember what it called itself. It was listed in a lesbian travel guide (but was hetero-friendly). If you don't like the hostel you wind up at, take the bus over to this place and check it out. We ate breakfast everyday in the backyard garden.
I don't have the exact address anymore (8xx Fulton Ave), but it's a cream-colored 3 story with brown and blue trim, just to the left of the parking lot on the top of the view in this aerial map.

Elements Hostel/Hotel in the Mission district is quite cool, and it's about a block or so to the BART, which will get you to wherever. I last stayed there about a year ago.

Oh, wow. Way to close the < /a> tag three words late. And I've just had a coffee, so no excuses there.>

Best answer: The Hayes Valley Inn is cheapish (at least for SF). I've never stayed there, but it's down the steet from my house in the lovely, adorable Hayes Valley, and only a few blocks from Market/Van Ness.

Best answer: Not sure if you're still looking for options, but the Edwardian is about as close to Van Ness and Market as you're going to get. There used to be a hostel on Market near there, but it's closed now. Folks I know who have stayed at the Edwardian thought it was fine for the price.
