The app you mention above, which you don't trust, and another program called DirectX Rollbacker (http://www.majorgeeks.com/DirectX_Rollbacker_d4718.html), which I cannot vouch for in any way. It may be just as suspect as DirectX Eradicator.
In general terms, I believe this is not something that is trivial or supported without use of the above creepy apps.

Oh, also, if this was a relatively recent update to Direct X, you might be able to use System Restore to roll the system back to a point in time prior to the installation of Direct X 9.0c.
Good luck! posted by kbanas at 7:57 AM on June 9, 2007
Supposedly you can change the version number in the registry then the installer will think you have an old version and try install itself. posted by damn dirty ape at 9:16 AM on June 9, 2007
I've tried uninstalling my Direct X before and it didn't work. If you've got those sort of problems you are better off reinstalling.
I know, I've done it. Afterwards my WinXP was more fuxxed than ever. posted by jammnrose at 10:10 AM on June 9, 2007
What I would do is download vmware and use a vitural xp to do this. At least if you fubar it there's no harm no foul. posted by TheCassiniDivision at 5:13 PM on June 9, 2007
