Are US t-shirt sizes the same as in NZ or the UK?

I want to purchase a t-shirt from an American site. Are the sizes - which are, in this case, small, medium, large, and so on - the same as they are in NZ (or the UK)?

I am told that large t-shirts, for instance, are longer in NZ and wider in the US. I want an (NZ) medium size, however.

Size differs according to manufacturer. For an example of some sizes in USA, see Threadless, but keep in mind that's just one manufacturer. The site you're buying from should be able to offer you a similar breakdown of size.

Definitely try to get the measurements for that particular manufacturer. I own clothes ranging in size from extra small to large -- there is no standard.
