And while you're at it, if anyone can provide a legend of everybody in the photo, I'd dig it.

Response by poster: Well, if someone can find a larger version, I'm sure I could provide a legend.

As far as i can tell the "dead" people don't represent anybody. True?

Times Square, NYC--ten times as large as life.

There is a slightly larger version here.

I recognize Vincent Pastore and Joe Pantoliano among the dead. Over to the left.

Response by poster: Here's a partial Legend.....

Standing (left to right): Silvio, Pauley Walnuts, Christopher, Aidrianna, Uncle Junior, Carmela, Tony, Dr. Melfi

Sitting (left to right): Janice, A.J., Meadow, not sure who the last one is, since it's so small, but I think it's Steve Buscemi, since he's joining the cast this season.

Can't tell who the bodies in the dirt are, but I assume it's people who died on the show. So, Big Pussy, that car dealership chick that Annabelle Sciorra played, Ralphie, and Jackie Jr. are probably in there.

The new Rolling Stone has a two-page spread of it, and yes, the fellow on the bow of the boat is Buscemi.

Yup, grabbingsand's right, definitely Joey Pants, and Pussy to the left. Gloria (car chick) in the cleavage? i don't know...

Response by poster: Okay, looking at the bigger picture, it's definitely (left to right) Ralphie, Big Pussy, Annabella Sciorra, and I *think* the one on the right is Jackie Jr. Anyone have an even better quality picture? The naked bodies aren't supposed to be anyone, I believe.

shit fuck I cant wait until the new season.. I've been waiting two years already. And that is an awesome picture.

It's an unbelievably awesome picture. No one does art anymore, and then to see this!

And I've never even seen The Sopranos.

Given that there's a truckload of symbolism going on in this picture, I hope I'm not reading too much into this...

But are we supposed to draw any conclusions from the fact that Silvio, Paulie and Dr. M aren't in the boat? Curtains for them this season?

The picture was "taken"/designed by Annie Liebowitz. And baltimore, there's a long history of speculation over past seasons' photos. This year is no different.

It is an awesome picture. There's also a two-page spread in this week's Entertainment Weekly.

Everyone in the boat is "Family"

There's an ad in this week's New Yorker that uses this photo.

don't know if it's curtains for them, but tony's methodology of conducting business in season four was "only thru blood". everyone in the boat is his family. the only thing that doesn't make sense is why Buscemi is sitting on the boat.

i think the naked woman on the left could be any number of woman tony has been involved with, the center naked women looks like the FBI agent that is working with Aidrianna.

on preview, rschroed beat me to it.

It's also in last weeks NY Times magazine.

FWIW, the Sopranos forums at Television Without Pity have a decent amount of semi-informed speculation about what's coming up this season.

Response by poster: Buscemi is in the boat because he's playing Tony's cousin, so that's keeping with the "Family" theme.

To add to the sources, there's also a huge 2-page spread of this in the NYT.

You can also grab another of Liebowitz's photos here.

New Yorkers can see a diorama version of this image in the front window of the HBO Building on 6th Ave, between 42nd and 43rd.

Family in the boat. Makes sense.

To add to the picture exegesis, maybe the nude on the far right is the stripper Ralphie pummelled in the parking lot.

So, is this a remix of a classical painting?
posted by mecran01 at 4:26 PM on March 3, 2004

It reminds me a bit of The Raft of the Medusa.

(To be honest, it reminds me of the cover of The Pogues' Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. It wasn't until many years after I first saw that LP that I realized it was a remix itself.

A coworker here says, "Brilliant. The River Styx, with Tony as Charon."

Family in the boat. Makes sense.

It does, but is Carmella in the boat? It looks (to my myopic eyes) like she's standing just outside, behind the kids.

And notice, once again, Dr. Melfi looks away. Granted, this is largely because Lorraine Bracco prefers (in a big way) to be photographed only from her right, but the Dr. Melfi on the sidelines, aware but not seeing symbolism is repeated year after year. It interestingly speaks to the growing ethical crisis she faces as Tony's therapist.

I hate this show, and yet I'm drawn to it. I'm watching an episode right now. Heaven help me.
