How do I slow down my CD drive so it's quieter?

My 48x CD-R drive is *really loud*. Is there any way to slow it down for basic tasks like audio CD playback? Googling finds me some brand-specific "control panel" apps, but this is a no-name model. Is there a generic utility out there?

I am not aware of any generic utility, I do not think such a thing is even possible with generic Windows ATAPI drivers. However this is usually caused by the drive's vibrations, rattling against something inside the case. You might want to check that ou.

If you're using Windows (unfrotunately, you don't say; this is critical to your question, people!) try Nero Drivespeed, downloadable from all over the place.
