How long should I expect postcards and small packages sent from Bangkok to New York and Los Angeles to spend in transit?

In my experience, and I lived in BKK for several years, outbound from Bangkok was usually pretty quick, about 5 days or so. Coming into Thailand was much slower.

I get both postcards and packets from a friend in Thailand, and the transit times vary wildly. Some arrive in a few days, sometimes either cards or packets take several weeks. Probably one in three is very delayed. Perhaps some vanish entirely, but we don't keep track.

My experience, years ago, was that many things mailed from Bangkok never arrived at their destination. Has this changed?

I never lost anything in mail in Bangkok, either coming in or going out, in the nine years I was there.
