Can't change brightness settings on DVD with Windows Media

windows media player attack !
I cant change the brightness settings etc when i play a dvd.

im running xp and a geforce 2 as well , the picture is way too dark , why wont it let me change the brightness and contrast ?

I think those are under display properties --> settings --> advanced --> geforce --> video overlay controls.
