A weekend in Alsace

Looking for recommendations for a trip to Alsace, France this weekend. Currently, we're just across the border in Germany. Should we rent a car or take the train? Which towns must we see on a weekend trip? What are the best things to do (hiking, castles, etc.) and the best places to stay? Thanks!

I recommend a visit to the Haut-Koenigsbourg

Strasbourg is a lovely town. If you're just there for two nights you could spend the whole time there. Go to the Musee Alsacien, take a boat tour on the river, and eat lots of flammekuchen.

I second the Haut Koeningsbourg. I would aslo suggest Riquewihr, a quaint walled city, and Colmar to the list. Those were three places I took visitors when I lived in the area.

You would need to rent a car to see these places though.

Google the Route du Vin if you like wine. There's lots of good hiking in the Vosges, and Saverne makes a good base (and is accessible by train). Eat at a winstub--plenty in Strasbourg, or drive around in the country until you find one. The Ecomusee d'Alsace is also interesting, if at times surreal.
