[LondonCurryFilter] What's the best curry house in Brick Lane?

.....or not in Brick Lane? Planning a curry night for my birthday - where to go?

I can't vouch for East London, but why don't you go to Southall? I recommend a very aptly named restaurant and banqueting hall there called Brilliant.

It's not on Brick Lane but Tayyabs is very near by.

Assuming that your birthday isn't during Ramadan of course.

Avoid Brick Lane, it's full of overpriced tourist traps with dodgy food and dodgier business practices (screwing you on the bill etc). Nearby is Commercial Road, where all the Indian-owned wholesale clothes shops are, and there's a fantastic place called The Lahore Kebab House. I went there last week, and it was phenomenal. It's a bit spartan, and very brightly lit, but the staff are friendly, the food is AMAZING (easily the best curry I've had in London, and I've had a few!) and it's bring yer own alcohol (you can nip across to the off-licence across the road for some cans, and they don't charge any corkage). Plus, it's super cheap - two main courses, and a big plate of pilau rice came to £18, so you can happily feed any size of party for under a tenner a head, not counting your beer from across the road. Highly recommended, and about ten minutes walk from Brick Lane.

Its a few years since I used to live on Brick Lane - but when we were there we learnt to stock up on ingredients for curries rather than curries themselves on the street. Some places where better than others but there was nowhere (IMHO) good enough to justify the place's reputation. I do miss the baegel shop on the other hand. I would second Happy Dave's suggestion also.

I was referred to the Lahore Kebab House when I asked this question here in December. It was absolutely incredible, both for the food and value for money.

Seconding Tayyabs - best Indian food I've had in London in a long time. Better on weekdays than on weekends, though, since they play very loud music at weekends apparently to move people in and out faster. Get the lamb chops and the fish masala. And yes, don't try to go during Ramadan.

Tayyabs is absolutely wonderful. It get very busy though so be prepared potentially to have to queue.

Fourthing Tayyabs - also, it doesn't make too many concessions to western palates, so don't go if you don't like things hot.

Tayyab's is amazing. Show up early to avoid queuing. I will have to sample this Lahore Kebab House.
