Alligator saves the day?

Children's book search: Old woman lives on a house on hill with animals and it rains for weeks?
One of my favorite books growing up was about an old woman who lived with all these animals and it rained for 44? days and the town was in trouble (needed food? needed to get someone to the hospital?) and the alligator (or crocodile) saved the day by fixing the bridge (or by swimming across the river). I remember the illustrations were nice, and showed this old house on a hill filled with antiques and possibly the woman played cards with the animals. Anyway have an idea of the name or author?
