Is it safe to machine wash polyester or nylon/poly flags?

I've got a pair of cheap polyester or nylon/poly flags (one Union Jack, one stars-n-bars) that are dirty from hanging in a smoker's office for too long. Are these safe to throw in the washing machine, if I don't heat-dry them?

and yes, I know about the "flag handling" guidelines, but if I can't clean these, I'll have to burn them and/or throw them away, and I don't want to do that.

first the gun, now the stars and bars. what's next, mrbill - how to mount the antlers on the ol' s.u.v.?

use the washing machine on gentle cycle, or, preferably, hand-wash them in a washbasin with a gentle detergent.

Response by poster: stonerose, thanks. I'll try the hand-wash. also, antlers on a Kia Sportage would look stupid, even here in Texas. 8-)

jerseygirl: dry cleaning would cost as much as the flags did in the first place.
