Recommend some bands and albums

Each boxing week I take advantage of record store sales and buy a heap of music. What's one album (doesn't matter when it came out) that you think I should buy and one band you think I should investigate? The recommended album doesn't have to be by the recommended band. [more inside]

I know that MeFi music threads often get out of hand so I'm asking if we can all play nice and not get into arguments and "your band sucks" debates. Please just list one of each (though "I second such and such's recommendation" may be helpful in the end)--pretend you could magically make one album appear under my Christmas tree. What would it be? (I like all genres. Yes, even country!)

Band: Guided By Voices
Album: GBV have a HUGE catalogue, but if you are just starting, pick up the newly released "Human Amusements at Hourly Rates," their 'best of' album that is quite spectacular. Soon after, you will start down the slippery slope of Robert Pollard's (the Mastermind) catalogue, which consists of approximately 5 releases per year, under various aliases, from the "Robert Pollard" solo albums, to the Lifeguards, Airport 5, Go Home Snowball, The Circus Devils, Lexo and the leapers, ect.

The 'best of' got a 9.5/10 on the uber pretentious pitchforkmedia.com, where they say that:
"the momentum and contrast worked into Human Amusements is so staggering that it far exceeds any Guided by Voices mix CD I've ever put together or heard. Listening to this album now, I can feel echoes of the same giddy excitement that I haven't been able to fully recapture since I listened to Mag Earwhig! for the very first time. I may have heard them all a hundred times before, but these are my 32 new favorite songs."

Also, for those fanatics out there, the newly released "HARDCORE UFO's" box set is well worth the money. You get the 'best of', a rarities cd, a b-sides cd, an amazing live album, GBV's first album "Forever Since Breakfast" (never before available on CD), and the "Watch Me Jumpstart" DVD."

Sorry, I get a bit preachy when it comes to Guided by Voices.

This is excellent, folks. Exactly what I was hoping for. Looks like the thread will be handy for any music nut. Also, if you could provide a link to a legal mp3 or band info, that would be handy or I fear I'll die of old age in the listening booth lineups. Those interested in hearing kickingtheground and Ufez Jones' suggestion of Explosions in the Sky can do so here, trharlan's enon here, scarabic's Tortoise here, Qmass's GBV here, and Crunchbuger's Crenshaw. Couldn't find samples on others or I was already familiar with them.

Album... Big Star - #1 Record / Radio City (Of course, there are 100 good choices for this, but this is the first thing I thought of. As close to a perfect album (two really) as they come.)

But I mean, how many possible contenders are there for these slots? How to choose? I'm going to presume there are no limitations, but I'm going to go with a current band I'm just getting into, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I really like them, esp. the songs "Timorous Me" and "The Great Communicator" (both on the album The Tyranny of Distance Uh... again, 100 possible selections, but there's something to start with.

Johnny Cash - American IV: The man comes around (2003)

Mr. Cash's last album before (may he rest in peace) he went to heaven, this album is astonishing in the way that he knew his time was up with every word in this album. I want to extenuate a true diamond in the rough to you, dear sir.

Album -- The Bridge, a tribute to Neil Young
Musician -- can't decide. I'm torn between the bands Will Oldham has been in [all his Palace Stuff & Bonny Prince Billy], the band that Pete Krebs has been in [Hazel, Golden Delicious, solo stuff, Gossamer Wings], or the bands Joel RL Phelps has been in [Downer Trio & Silkworm]. I'm in a singer/songwriter phase. A lot of Songs::Ohia's music is evocative of all three guys.

I have to say I also love that Tortoise album, the Shins, Richard Thompson, the Clash and most of the music that has already been listed.

My friend's band actually released a split with the Wrens that came out about a year before their current album. Sadly, most copies were lost in a fire.

I should also mention Yo La Tengo as a band worth checking out.

Jon Brion, Jon Brion, Jon Brion. Can't be any clearer :-) (FWIW, he's the guy that produced Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann's hottest albums, and also did the Magnolia soundtrack, but he has a solo album and it's mind blowing.. like the Beatles crossed with Brian Wilson)

Love Ritual by Al Green. If you can't find that, I think Listen to the Rarities has many of the same tracks.

Clear Spot by Captain Beefheart is a great rock record.

Booker T. and the MGs – get their Play the Hip Hits on Ace Records for some stuff you probably haven't heard before.
