Help me find this forgotten book.

My turn to ask about a book...

Since it seems today is the day to ask about forgotten book, I guess I'll ask about one I've been looking for. I read it in high school, it was about a woman who was a witch and she had a "collection" of familiars. At the end of the book she was fighting a demon and ended up taking him as her last familiar or something. I don't remember it being a great book, but it was pretty good.

This sounds a lot like The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip, but at the end of that I think she lets all her familiars free.

Hmmm...name doesn't sound familiar (no pun intended), but looking at the description and comments at Amazon, it looks like it might be. Did she have an old, old, old cat as one of her familiars? Did the smoky creature turn into the familiar she'd been searching for all of her life at the end?
