Brainstorm jobs
October 7, 2024 11:20 PM

Young person has an opportunity to have a paid internship. The pay comes from a third party who I believe match-makes with the companies. We are brainstorming internship ideas in advance of a meeting Wednesday where we will also learn more about the program. We would like help generating ideas before the meeting. Details of young person's skills and interests inside.

This young person is a quick learner and clever. He has not done well in academic environments though very literate/good test taker. Has taken carpentry classes at community college but school is not a great environment for him. Has also had retail jobs. He had a data entry job which he actually liked ok but thought he would get bored if it had not been a temp job. Has ADHD and autism. He is very executive function impaired - does well with a balance of prompts/clear tasks but also not being super micromanaged. Likes people, funny and outgoing. But does need shorter work days/lots of recovery time which this program should accommodate.

My instinct is physical work, and tasks that have a clear and satisfying completion to them. Some ideas we've brainstormed so far are:

Locksmith
Light/sound/theater tech
Moving company
Professional kitchen

Would love your suggestions and ideas.

* Electrician
* Plumbing
* Landscaping
* Any other skilled trade that offers opportunities both for unionized work and independent contracting

The ADHD means that he will find it very hard to sit in an office for hours on end. I certainly did. Flexible schedule / come and go as the job demands are important to us.

Welding? One advantage is there is a lot of room to specialize and advance and get higher pay without being a foreman/manager, relative to other trades.

Has taken carpentry classes at community college but school is not a great environment for him

What aspects were a problem for him? (Asking in case those are also aspects to try to avoid in recommending working environments.)

Dog training? A friend’s little brother felt aimless at college - studied philosophy, audio engineering, some other things - but absolutely clicked when he took a summer job as a dog trainer. His career took off like a shot - he’s been a small business owner since his late twenties, a pillar in his community, and loves his work.
