Can you help me identify this artist?

Okay, this painter is a male, middle aged or older. I believe they are living in Paris but are American and their paintings look like candid snapshots, the paint seems to have a bit of “flash” but where you can’t quite see the subjects faces because they’re blurred. Lots are of nightlife in the 80’s I think…. Does this ring a bell?
I might have even come across him on a metafilter thread here where there was a discussion about a photography book, or a photography book was mentioned- of New York life, party life, rawness… in the 80’s… but he wasn’t the photographer or anything. Does this ring a bell?
One painting is of a girl with blond hair under a streetlight wearing a black dress, looking at you (but again the face is blurry) and holding a cigarette (I think)
