Slim, comfy jeans

I asked this question almost two years ago and looking to replace a pair of jeans (uniqlo and gap) as I've gotten a little bigger and the jeans are starting to fray. What's new in jeans for a sub $100 pair of jeans that are dark wash, slim but not too tight and are not baggy?
Universal Standard jeans are $98 and they have a variety of washes and widths (from skinny to wide). They definitely have different cuts for different bodies on the pear/apple shape axis.
As a pear shape myself I have had decent luck with Warp & Weft plus jeans. I know they have other cuts so maybe one will fit you. Spouse wears skinny jeans and he has also had decent luck there in his size, so you might also look at their men's jeans.

What size are you - or at least, do you typically wear straight sizes, plus sizes, or in between? Do you prefer a men’s cut or a women’s cut or is either ok?

Seconding Universal Standard jeans; they have sales pretty regularly, too. My only caveat is that I bought two pairs of jeans from them in the same size and style but different colors, and one pair is noticeably tighter than the other.
Kohl's can be hit-or-miss but I've had decent luck with their Sonoma brand.
