WordPress theme recommendations

It's 2023 (I know what the heck) and I want to host my own big or archive again. I say WordPress because I know it well, but I'm looking for suggestions on a theme - or platform - I can use for microblogging, a la Kottke or Tumblr style.

No particular pony requirements other than I want something off the shelf and to host on my own domain. Think of this as a personal replacement for the product formerly known as Twitter.

You could set up your own Mastodon instance - you'd have complete control over your data and be able to interact with other people/accounts in a very similar fashion to Twitter. Installing it is a it more involved than "off the shelf", though

https://write.as/ looks like a nice, simple, blogging platform, although I haven't used it, other than a couple of test posts.

https://micro.blog/ also looks nice, in a minimal way.

I would strongly discourage you from micro.blog. I tried it and found it lacking and they kept spamming me with no unsubscribe link. I mailed 3 times asking them to stop and they didn't. I finally sent them an expletive-laden email and they wrote me back saying they wouldn't mail me anymore but that I was exaggerating and they'd only mailed me once. My email currently shows 6 spams from them over 9 days.

Best answer: WordPress is still a viable option for what you're looking for. A minimalist theme like hey, mr. writer,, or upsidedown may be what you're looking for.

(Note if you change themes, try to stick with one that are labeled as full site editing; it'll help when you change from one theme to another.

Hosting-wise, for your needs, siteground or a2 hosting have basic packages at affordable prices. Both of those sites' basic packages (under $15/month) would be suitable for what you're describing (note, both of them will probably upsell you, for your needs, you don't need it). Wordpress.com also is stable and solid although a little bit more pricy for your relatively simple needs.

Best answer: I use twenty fifteen as a no-frills blog, two columns no headbar.
