The Persian Puzzle

Even though it's heavy on the Iran side, it should give you a good idea of the Middle East as a whole. It has a great synopsis of Persian history from the beginnings to now.

If you are interested in Arab histroy, I found Albert Hourani's History of the Arab Peoples very readable and informative. Mr. Hourani is dead now, but there is second edition out with some updating by another scholar. Check it out if interested.

I thought William Polk's The Arab World Today was pretty good.
