That Great R&B Live Album I Heard That Time
February 24, 2023 2:41 PM

I heard this band's music in a store a few years ago pre-Covid - "Unremarkable Name and the Something(s) Live at That Place." Black artist, great R&B-ish rock, horn section, danceable but not "dance" music. I looked them up then and went "Ooooh yeah! I'll remember this!!" Now we're on a different streaming service and I can't remember the name. Searching has found me only fails. Please help me find this music so I can shake it on down please.

The Daptone Super Soul Revue (Live at the Apollo) by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings?

Edited to ask: is this a contemporary group and album, as in this decade? Or, like, classic 60s 70s type thing?

I was thinking Sharon Jones and Dap-tones. Also could be Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band - Live From The House Of Soul.

Or look into anything by the Budos Band or possibly Connie Price and the Keystones.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Charles Bradley.

Mayyybe Robert Randolph and the Family Band. They put out a Live at The Wetlands album in 2002. No horn section, but maybe there was on that album (I have not listened to it).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_R%26B_musicians might define R&B different than you had in mind, but it has :
Billy Ward and his Dominoes
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Francis and the Lights
Jake and the Phatman
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
Little Anthony and the Imperials
Lous and the Yakuza
Love and Sas
Luke and Q
Martha and the Vandellas
Sly and the Family Stone
Yarbough and Peoples

...whose names might ring a bell. Failing that, there's probably a more complete list of band names (and maybe discographies) somewhere out there. I hope you find them, and a couple new favorites while on the prowl.

(If it's none of the excellent suggestions above, a general "around 1968" or even "the refrain of my favorite song went 'something something fossils dah-dah-dah'" can sometimes be helpful too.)

These are excellent suggestions, although I’m not sure any of them is the band I remember. I’ll choose the best answer after I’ve had a chance to listen to a few more.

Thank you!

Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers? (This wouldn't quite follow your pattern, but Sam Cooke live at the Harlem Square Club" is a classic with horns and is danceable.

-Wilson Pickett and the Falcons

I agree, it will help if you can narrow down the potential dates.

Oh my favorite:
Donny Hathaway Live 1971
(at The Bitter End & The troubadour, I think)

All these answers have been either good reminders (Dap-Tones!) or nice discoveries (Robert Randolph and the Family Band!) though none seem to ring the precise bell for me. I remember the group being contemporary, so sometime after 2010-ish?

Please add more suggestions, though I'm marking the Charles Bradley answer as best. He's got a terrific Otis Redding vibe.

Thank you, AskMeFites.
