I am interested in getting my child and myself two Pokémon CCG decks to play. UnfortunatelyI am also overwhelmed with the choices. A lot of the deck sets seem geared and priced towards collectors and I'm confused by the editions (I assume it's like MtG where cards from any expansion can be used, but who bloody knows). Please recommend basic starter decks/sets that are relatively cheap for people who just want to play the game. Any related tips, resources, or purchasing recs welcome!

Best answer: The Pokemon Battle Academy is designed as a great starter. It comes with 3 decks, they are fairly well-balanced. And the first time through there are very literal directions to teach you how to play the game. When my 5 year old wanted to learn to play, that's how we started. For 15 dollars, its hard to go wrong starting there. It also comes with a coin, damager markers, and a board.

Response by poster: Thanks, that is 100% what I was looking for! Apparently not in stock at any retailers in my podunk Canadian town, which would explain why I did not see it anywhere!
