Should I keep my Norwalk juicer?

I recently inherited a Norwalk 280 juicer. It's extremely heavy, takes up a lot of countertop space, and seems complicated to operate/clean. We are not green-juice health fanatics, in fact, kinda the opposite. Is it worth keeping for the price of $free?

We had no idea what this machine even was but a relative mentioned that it's a very expensive high-end juicer, which seems to check out with basic online research. We just thought it might be nice to make fresh orange and grapefruit juice for cocktails or smoothies, but I read that the Norwalk is actually not great at juicing fruit?

We're NOT vegetable juice people and unlikely to convert. Please don't suggest that I try adding ginger/turmeric/spinach into fruit juice; I've already sampled that type of thing at expensive juice bars and dislike it. If I'm going to drink juice, I want it to taste 100% like fruit (not tomatoes/vegetable-type fruits) and nothing else.

Bonus: If you're recommending that we keep it, please recommend a good intro Youtube video or other tutorial on how to use the dang thing. If you're recommending that we get rid of it, is there a way to either resell or donate to a good cause (not a generic destination like Goodwill)?

Best answer: No. Pass it along to someone who will be delighted to have the machine, whether you donate, sell or re-gift it. If it makes you feel better, consider that whoever gave it to you wouldn't want you to be burdened (or to have burdened you) by their gift. Think Marie Kondo: it's not sparking joy and, if you tend to anthropomorphize, the machine itself wants to be useful and, at present, isn't.

It sounds like it's annoying you already. I think this sort of thing is appreciated most by people who have orange or apple trees in their yard.

Pass it along to someone who will use it.

They seem to sell on eBay for >1000 with buyers paying shipping

If you live in a larger city you can likely sell it in a month or two on craigslist or facebook marketplace.

Best answer: I inherited my juicer in exactly this way, and was thrilled. Just pass it along! (I will periodically be Very Into Juice and let me tell you even then I feel like it’s a bit of a burden taking up space for the rest of the time, so if you don’t want it, you don’t want it!)

I bought a Breville (not quite as nice but!) one summer when I'd bought a too-large CSA share and the only way to use up the endless produce was to drink it.

Eventually, I gave it to a health nut coworker and never looked back. She was happy to have it. And on my end, it was 100% worth it, both for getting the counter space back and for the freedom of no longer feeling obligated to use it.

Definitely not worth it. If you needed a juicer, you'd probably already know it. Sell it for fat piles of cash, and donate the money to your favorite orgs.

If you don't want to mess with selling it, you could always donate it to the Metafilter auction :)

Best answer: No. Run away!
Big electric juicers are notoriously a chore to clean. I would've kept ours (a gift) but just not a convenient enough kitchen tool. Sold it.
However we do have a small electric Citrus Juicer (Braun?) which is easy to clean and very convenient for fresh orange and lemon juice.

Get rid of.

Best answer: I loved ours. It made the greatest juice. But we got rid of it in the end because it was such a pain to clean, and massive, and juice bars are everywhere anyway.
