Short story, quite possibly but not necessarily by Ray Bradbury. The light that humans saw as the star of Bethlehem turns out to have been generated by an incident (probably a star exploding or similar) that caused the death of a non-human population. I would most likely have read this in the 1980s. What was this story?

The Twilight Zone did a very disappointing production of The Star. It tried to "correct" Clarke's bleak rational ending with "well, they were nearly dead anyway, so why not blow them up." God's still a good guy! Yay! Rod Serling and GRR Martin probably grit their teeth over this.
