I need food and lodging recommendations for downtown Phoenix.

My wife and I are heading to Phoenix for the Elton John show at Chase Field in November. We're flying in on Thursday and leaving Sunday, and we want to stay in downtown Phoenix or somewhere fairly close to Chase Field.

We both know Phoenix reasonably well - my wife's from Tucson and has spent a lot of time in Phoenix, and I also have family in both Phoenix and Tucson. So we don't really need "how to get around and oh by the way Phoenix is big and sprawly, be prepared" type advice - that part of it, we get. None of our Phoenix experience is all that recent, though, so we're very out of touch with what the restaurant/bar/hotel scene is like now.

We're not renting a car, our plan is basically to cab from the airport to the hotel, and ideally be able to walk/short cab ride to good Mexican food and/or a good, low-key dive bar type place. We would, thus, love to find good food/drink within reasonable walking distance and that's not in Scottsdale/Tempe/a suburb. Ideally and mostly Mexican food, but we're open to good stuff of all stripes (and a good breakfast place would be a bonus!).

To be totally micro about it, we are hoping to find a good place to stay, and good places to eat/drink, in the square bounded by I-10/Chase Field (7th St)/7th Ave. We could expand out a bit but that's basically where we're thinking. If something great is on or close to the streetcar, we'd expand that square a bit, but again we're not looking to wander very far afield this trip.

I wouldn't say money is no object, but as long as we can hotel for $200/night or less we're good - and we're looking more for solid neighborhoody/local places than Fine Dining Experiences, food-price wise.

I used to be a very frequent traveler. In Phoenix:

For traditional Oaxaca style tacos and the best fresh salsa bar I've ever encountered, you want La Santisima. This is a local hole in the wall place that's about as authentic as it gets, and you can get a huge range of stuff - shark fin tacos, strawberry salsa...

For hipster tacos, you want Joyride Tacos.

Both have lots of options - I was vegan for at least one of my trips here and it was no issue.

Carniceria Mexico 4450 South 19th Avenue, 85041
602-276 4210.
This place has some of the best food I have ever eaten. I was in town, down from Monument Valley, to get a windshield for my VW Van, at a place called, Affordable German. I asked the guys if there were a place with good food near by. This was their go to place. They have a big smoker outside and a big assembly table for whatever you want in a taco or burrito, or salad, the smoked pork ribs were all that. The burrito, I ate all the way home, is still remembered as the best ever. This may not be right downtown, but you won't forget it.I ate there in 2013, they are still open. All their stuff was so fresh, and the guac was great. Lots of drinks and other side things available.

If you like seafood and Mexican, Mariscos Playa Hermosa was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Amazing everything.
