A Long Weekend in Saugerties, NY - Suggestions for Things To Do

My partner, my dog, and I will be staying in Saugerties, NY, for a long weekend. What would you suggest for things to do?

We will be driving, so car trips in the Hudson Valley are possible. Also, we can leave our dog at the place we're staying, so activities do not have to be dog-friendly. We'd love to hear about anything you're passionate about or deem a must-see.

Things we generally like :
  • Bakeries or interesting food stands
  • Movie theaters
  • Local shopping
  • Restaurants with vegetarian options
  • Coffee and teas
  • Book stores
  • Art
  • History
We don't drink alcohol or ski.

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Best answer: How about Opus 40 (outdoors)

Best answer: You didn't list anything outdoorsy but I recommend Kaaterskill Falls for an easy woodsy walk with lovely photo op.

Kingston has a smattering of cute stuff that I love including a bookstore/cafe in an old 18th century school house. Kingston has good history too as it was the first capitol of New York.

Depending on when you are going, you could visit Catskills Animal Sanctuary and get some cuddles.

Best answer: Definitely Opus 40 - it's one of the most unique and beautiful places I've ever been.

Best answer: Saugerties:
Miss Lucy's Kitchen in Saugerties is delicious for brunch/lunch/dinner

Olsen & Company has delicious coffee, pastries, sandwiches

I've always wanted to visit the Saugerties Lighthouse but I haven't had a chance.

Kingston:
I love Blue Cashew for fun kitchen goods and that area is great for other shopping--bookstores, toystores, clothes, etc. Clove and Creek is another good stop.

Woodstock:
Great little town to walk around in. Silvia and Good Night Rock City are the top fancy places for dinner. Mud Club is good for bagels and coffee on the weekends and feels like a hang-out (outdoors).
For art and history, check out Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, an artist colony. You can check out exhibitions and do a walking tour of the historic grounds.

More art (Catskill, NY):

I've never been to the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. Cole was responsible for originating the Hudson River School of landscape painting and popularizing the area for tourism generally. But, one of my top recommendations would be to follow the Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway audio driving tour. Leave plenty of time for it so you can get out and explore some of the stops along the way

A little farther afield (across the river in Hudson NY) is Olana, artist Frederick Church's home, a fascinating place.

One of my favorite areas! Have a great time.

Best answer: The Saugerities Lighthouse (linked above) is my favorite thing to do in the area. For a nice, not too challenging walk in the woods check out Esopus Bend Nature Preserve. In nearby Woodstock is the delicious Garden Cafe with a vast vegan menu. Plus Woodstock is a fun place to stroll (bookstores and other interesting shops).

Best answer: From your question it sounds like you are into poking around quaint little towns - Saugerties is absolutely great for that. Woodstock is similarly cute and pleasant, and might have better food, and so is Kingston. A little farther, New Paltz is more of a college town - still cute, just crustier - but there are two great bookstores and veggie food galore.

Two easy outdoor things I would highly recommend, in any weather other than active storms - Saugerties Lighthouse is a must see, walk right out into the middle of the damn Hudson.

A walk around Ashokan Resevoir, just south of Woodstock, not more than 30 mins from Saugerties, is delightful and has the best views of the Catskills without needing to climb.
