A rose by any other name would smell as doggy

We have just fostered a new pup. He needs a name!

He's 55 pounds of compact mixed-breed energy. His previous people apparently called him Hercules but he doesn't really respond to that. While it matches his strength, it's not really a good dog name to shout into the yard or use to address the dog (I feel like the mom from the Nutty Professor). It's too long and doesn't flow well. He doesn't even look up when you use it. He's about 1.5 years old, so hopefully still young enough to learn a new name.

He's a mutt, probably mostly a bully breed like APBT or AmStaff and maybe a little Boston Terrier (those ears). When he yawns, he's obviously also part shark (he looks like Stitch from Lilo & Stitch - that has been vetoed).

I need something short and shoutable, no more than 1 or 2 syllables. I like people names, but not a requirement. Something that works in German would be a nice extra (so my grandmother can say the name of her great-granddog without tripping - please no TH in the name).

Help me, Meta!

I always suggest "Beanplate" for pet names, and one day a mefite will take me up on it.

How about Ajax? You'd get the mythology angle but it's easier to shout.

It appears that the German word for shark is hai. Also used as a name meaning "from the sea"

Sticking with the theme of the letter H and German people names, how about Heinz? It means "ruler of the home". Or if he likes sticks, Hackett? That means "little woodcutter".

When I call my dog I often just yell "Come on!" or "Load up!", neither of which is his name but he responds to them so there's that.

Your beautiful dog is so smilingly wonderful! Congrats, and thank you for fostering!

I think he may be an Egbert, called Eggie or Eggs except when he's in trouble.

I love Heinz. Not only the meaning and the Germanness, but it reflects that he's a mutt - 57 flavors!

Ratatosk is the busy squirrel who clambers up and down Yggdrasil as presumably your pup will too. I know that’s too long for daily/shouted use but it shortens to Rats or Ratso or Tusker or maybe even Squirrel.

Perhaps a Roger or an Oliver.

He looks like a Pierre or a Pete. Therefore, to be influenced by German, he is a Petrus, or, in a sideways move, a Dieter.

He’s got kind of a “tough guy on the outside, softie on the inside” vibe going on, like Nathan Detroit from Guys and Dolls.

Heinz (short for Heinrich/Henry) seems to meet with approval, and it's nice and shoutable. Thanks again!
