App to use with heart rate monitor chest strap?

I bought a heart rate monitor chest strap to monitor my heart rate during the day in general as well as during exercise. I can find iOS apps that are useful for measuring it during exercise, but not constant monitoring (or at least when I'm not working out). I want to keep a track of heart palpitations. Can you help?
Lie to the apps and tell them you're constantly working out? If possible maybe choose a profile like "treadmill" as opposed to "outdoor run" so the app won't waste battery running the GPS non-stop.

+1 uberchet. There's probably a fitness tracker that would be perfect for this, and would be less annoying to wear than a chest strap all day (added: looks like at least some Fitbits do this now).

I bought a Polar Vantage M a few months back as an exercise watch, and it's also a great fitness tracker with optical HR measurement (so no strap needed, but I've found it's more comfortable for me to wear it loose and use my chest strap for running or biking). It does have continuous heart rate tracking and it gives you good info on your sleep patterns.

That's an edge case for most HRM apps, I suspect, but there are several smartwatch/fitness tracker options that track heart rate constantly. Would one of those work?
