I'm looking for fiction or non-fiction books (fiction preferred) with modern-day Israel as the setting (I don't want to clog up this thread).

the source by james michener is one of my favorite books and narrates the history of a well in israel and the history that surrounds it through the ages. only a portion of the book is about modern israel so it doesnt really answer your question, but i recommend this book anyways-- it has a very emotional chapter about the war, a love story, and gave me a better sense of the history of the region than any textbook ever could

Best answer: I got some good author listings when I asked this question.

I keep hearing about this book, but I've never read it. He's the only modern Israeli author I could name even if you offered me a million bucks.

Anything by A. B. Yehoshua. They're excellent, and I believe all set in recent/contemporary Israel, except Journey to the End of the Millenium.

I just read someone to run with by David Grossman. It was alright - definitely took place in modern day Israel. I think most of his stuff probably does.

I liked The Secret Agent by Benjamin Tammuz.

"Bethlehem Road Murder" by Batya Gur. Interesting, well-written, and not nasty or gory. I found it at my local library. She's written other books set in Israel which are also supposed to be good, but I haven't read them, so can't personally recommend them.

I second A. B. Yehoshua, especially Mr. Mani (works backward in time from modern Israel to places the Mani family lived previously).
