Please help us identify this gay film!

We are trying to identify a film from around 20 years ago. Can you help us to identify it? The plot revolves around two gay couples, with Nigel Hawthorne playing one of the men. The four meet at an academic conference of some sort, and the partner of the character played by Nigel Hawthorne gets together with one half of the other couple. The film takes place in the United States, possibly in New England.

Possibly a dumb question, but have you looked over Hawthorne's filmography? There's a list on Wikipedia, and another one on IMDb.

Response by poster: We have indeed looked at both, with no luck.

Best answer: Is there any chance you are conflating two movies? Some of this makes me think of Wonder Boys, from 19 years ago.

Best answer: Sounds like a minor thread of the plot in The Object of My Affection.

The two leads are Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, who comes to live with Jennifer when he breaks up with his boyfriend, an academic scholar of George Bernard Shaw played by Tim Daly. There's a section of the film where Tim invites Paul to go away for a weekend to a Shaw conference hoping to reconcile but instead and Paul meets someone who turns out to be living with Nigel Hawthorne. Nigel plays a crusty old drama critic, and he's mentoring the young actor Paul's character falls for.

Is that it, perhaps?

It's entirely possible if you came in to the movie halfway, you wouldn't even know that there was a whole other major plot going on with Jennifer and Paul.

Response by poster: Thank you all! We had discussed The Object of My Affection but ruled it out. I guess that was probably the one after all.
