Looking for non-adventurous restaurant recommendation near Atlanta

Adventurous diners looking for non-adventurous restaurant recommendation in Atlanta, GA.

I've been asked to find a restaurant for a family celebration (no kids) with 6-8 people attending, sometime between 12/20 and 12/26 near Atlanta, GA.

Ordinarily we are very adventurous eaters, but we have a diner who does not share our point of view.

Our picky diner is 'not into very spicy foreign food, loves hoagies, burgers, hot dogs or similar, Mexican, Italian and comfort food.'

I don't know Atlanta well, and am at a bit of a loss given those rather dispiriting restrictions. (increasing the difficulty level, we have folks are are lactose intolerant)

Can you help me find a restaurant we can all enjoy?

Thank you!

There will be plenty of choices but it’s a big city geographically—do you have any information about what part of town or the suburbs you are looking to be in?

A really good Chinese restaurant will have interesting entrees, lots of stuff that isn't spicy (including fried appetizers and lots of rice, and you can always get just stir-fried meat or something), and almost nothing with dairy in it.

Yeah, it'll depend on if you really mean Atlanta or the suburbs. But if you want easy comfort food, what about barbecue? I can recommend Fox Brothers.

I’ve pitched it before here but at this time of year we always do a big family dinner out at Mellow Mushroom for pizza. Highly recommended. They have several locations.

If they're willing to explore the non-spicy side of Thai cuisine, Nan Thai in midtown is pretty yummy.

Response by poster: We'll be staying in Norcross, they are coming from Avondale Estates if that helps- thanks!

Check out the menu at OK Cafe. If you think Thai would work, I highly recommend Tuk Tuk, and the atmostphere there is a little more upscale and celebratory. Both of those restaurants are closer in to downtown, and not really near where either of you are coming from. If you want something closer, check out restaurant listings for downtown Decatur which is near Avondale Estates. There are lots of great choices, but since that's not my side of town I don't have any specific recommendations.

If brunch is an option, there's a branch of the Flying Biscuit near Norcross. Good standard breakfast/brunch fare.

This is my neck of the woods.

Lactose intolerance plus non-adventuresome plus the geography you're starting with is a tough one. Your halfway point is probably somewhere on Buford Highway, which is the adventuresome-eating capital of Atlanta.

But since Mexican counts as "non-adventurous" I'd recommend El Rey Del Taco, which has all the usual Mexican dishes. My one-year-old happily eats there, as does my 70-year-old mother-in-law. (They both get quesadillas.)

Bambinelli's is my go-to Italian-American ("red sauce") place. I'd call ahead to check that they're open, though; the mother of the family died a couple weeks ago. There are probably a good number of cheese-heavy dishes on the menu but your lactose-intolerant diner would have some options.

(Huffy Puffy's recommendation of the Varsity should not be taken seriously. rustcellar's recommendation of Mellow Mushroom should be taken seriously.)

Also, Athens Pizza for (as you could guess from the name) Greek food and pizza.

From the details we have, I'm thinking Decaturish and thinking sit down, not too fancy, but a little fancy. If it's lunch time Sun in My Belly.

Dinner time, maybe The Deer and The Dove. I haven't been yet, but it seems like while it's a little fancy, they're definitely going for traditional American, and there's stuff your picky eater would eat. If that seems too fancy, Leon's or Thinking Man.

If they love burgers and hot dogs I bet they'll love Fox Brothers BBQ.

(Sorry not sure about Atlanta geography - I was a passive passenger)

Response by poster: [I would murder for good pizza, but it's not a great option for dairy free]

Second hydropsyche’s recommendation of Leon’s.

I do kinda feel like Nick Frost in Shaun of the Dead suggesting the Winchester.

The Mad Italian might fit the bill.

I haven't been to Mellow Mushroom in a long time and don't remember if it's tasty or not, but it's worth pointing out if your lactose-intolerant person likes Follow Your Heart vegan cheese, they have that as an option.
