Handbreak needs libdvdcss - IIRC you can get this by installing VLC. It's a one-time headache. See here

It doesn't seem to be via VLC anymore, but I swear that was part of it at one time. Anyway, the HowToGeek link should do you fine.

Handbrake can handle DRM'd DVDs if you install libdvdcss. The best way to do this is to first install Brew, then in your terminal type brew install libdvdcss.

I use MakeMKV to rip, then encode with Handbrake.

I have a Mac Mini running Plex as my HTPC, and my workflow is similar to porn in the woods. I rip the BD/DVD with MakeMKV, and then use Handbrake to encode into something more manageable in size.

Just to clarify, if you're looking for something that can copy the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD direct to your hard drive without copy protection, especially for archival or easier playback purposes, you probably want RipIt, which I've used for years very happily.
Once you have that folder and want to clip out scenes, or compress the movie into one video file, then Handbrake will probably do what you want.

dvdbackup also makes a decrypted, lossless copy to disk, it's what I use on Linux and apparently there's a Mac version on Brew.
